Second school gate

Appearance

The Second Campus Gate is located on Qinghua Road, one of the main roads of Tsinghua University. It is one of the most representative landmark buildings in Tsinghua University and is considered a symbol of Tsinghua University. The second school gate is a classical and elegant "archway" style building with three arches and blue bricks and white columns. The lintel is engraved with the three characters "Tsinghua Garden" in the handwriting of Na Tong, a great scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. Standing on Tsinghua Road and looking north to the second school gate, you can see the Tsinghua Auditorium, the sundial and the Tsinghua Academy in the distance.

The Second Campus Gate is the earliest main campus gate of Tsinghua University and was built in 1909. In 1933, the campus was expanded, the garden wall was moved outward, and a new gate (today's West Campus Gate) was built. Since then, this earliest school gate has been called the "Second School Gate".

On August 24, 1966, the second school gate was pushed down and smashed by the "Tsinghua University Red Guards" as the "four olds". On the occasion of Tsinghua's 80th anniversary in 1991, with donations from Tsinghua alumni, the second gate was rebuilt on its original site.

Spring, summer, autumn and winter, year after year, time flies by. Standing on the main road of the campus, the Second Campus Gate silently witnesses the history and development of Tsinghua University in the wind and rain. It is not only a distinctive symbol of Tsinghua University, but also a symbol of the long-standing character of Tsinghua people who are diligent, realistic, and unfazed by honor or disgrace.
